For their second album, Red Night, The Hundred in the Hands drained all the sugar from their sound, abandoning the light groovy quirk of earlier records for a brooding rumination on love. A sophisticated use of reverb and stereo imaging makes listening to these songs quite the aural trip: while Red Night’s particular wall of sound is tastefully constructed, preserving a solid low-end and painted with the appropriate amount of shine, some of its most beautiful moments unfold in the emptiness, in the seconds where the space is vacated and some careful subtlety lingers by itself.
