Robyn‘s prolific 2010 culminated with Body Talk, the full-length album that featured songs from the Body Talk pt. 1 and pt. 2 EPs, plus enough new songs to make up a third EP (pt.3). Releasing that much new music within six months was a feat in and of itself, but the fact that each part of Body Talk was so consistent made the whole project even more impressive. And, by revealing bits and pieces of what went into the final album as well as parts that didn’t Robyn offered her fans a window into her process, allowing glimpses of the moods and approaches that go into making an album and letting listeners get to know these songs in different contexts. Of course, Body Talk‘s appeal isn’t just experimental: by picking the best of the project’s songs, it feels like a greatest-hits collection and brand new album rolled into one.

Robyn - Body Talk pt.2

The first episode of the Body Talk trilogy did well in bringing a bit more recognition for Robyn stateside. But Body Talk pt.1, itself, did a bit to shake up the sound that had been so tightly associated with the singer for the half-decade which followed the initial release of her universally acclaimed self-titled record. Considering the pop-synth that dominated it and that at the time there were two steps yet to take before the Body Talk series would end, with the release it appeared as though Robyn was on pace to completely reinvent herself (once again). But with Body Talk pt.2, however, she has done just the opposite: rather than pursuing further experimentation, it reverts back to the sound which modern Robyn fans have come to know her by.
Anyway, regardless of where Robyn goes with pt. 3, with only the first album in mind, the Body Talk series has already become a success.

Robyn - Body Talk pt.1

It’s been five years since the original release of Robyn. Half a decade since a new Robyn album, but now the swedish dancehall queen announced her plan to release three albums in one year, starting off with Body Talk pt. 1. Her reason behind the three separate albums was so she could freshly release the music as it was created instead of making the fans wait for a single from an album that is almost a year or two old. So now that listeners knew the title and concept behind the albums and it was time for the music.
Body Talk pt.1 is a brilliant piece of work from Robyn: nothing innovative, but really good.
