Pretty weird duo Empire of the Sun (consisting of Luke Steele and Nick Littlemore) arrived back in 2009 surrounded by industry hype and big promises and they didn’t fail to deliver one of the year’s strongest sleeper debuts and in turn gain themselves a cult following. Luckily for that loyal fanbase, their second outing Ice On the Dune picks up neatly from where they left us. Rather than more of the same, this is an expansion on what made their breakout so captivating, and for that they should clinch the wider appreciation they so very much deserve.

Revered Parisian electronic duo Air (Nicolas Godin and JB Dunckel) were asked to compose an original score for the restored version of the classic 1902 silent film Le Voyage Dans La Lune (“A Trip to the Moon”) by Georges Méliès. This new album is the fully realized outcome of that collaboration. Georges Méliès is one of the central characters in Martin Scorsese‘s new blockbuster hit Hugo and his life and work (including the iconic “A Trip to the Moon”) is attracting a whole new wave of interest as a result. Features vocals and lyrics by Victoria Legrand of Beach House on Seven Stars and Au Revoir Simone on Who Am I Now?.

Written by The Kooks, produced by Tony Hoffer (Beck, Air, Belle & Sebastian), and recorded in The Sound Factory (Los Angeles) and Sarm Studios (London), the band’s third album sees them consolidating their position as a bona fide album band with trademark breeziness and catchy hooks. Kicking off with a dramatic breakbeat, the opening track builds across acoustic guitar and warm washes of synth before collapsing into a chorus you’ll be singing for days. It shows, that despite the change in their influences, the band still have a firm grasp on how to write killer hooks and pop songs without compare.
