Where Nick Drake would have met Beck: that’s the place where Matthew de Zoete‘s new album Colour Films sounds have grown. Produced by Les Cooper (Jill Barber, Good Lovelies, Meaghan Smith) and graced with beautiful harmonies by Julie Fader (Sarah Harmer, Great Lake Swimmers), Colour Film displays the confidence and strength of a young man hitting his stride. Matthew’s intention with this album was to make a collection of songs that were direct and succinct enough to be the soundtrack for a short film: songs that have a tight focus, lots of visual imagery, and easily discernible characters, plot, and context. We must say that the score has been centered: sweet melodies, soft arrangements but a strong cinematic impact.
