Manchester rock troubadours Elbow seem to have spent the past few years simultaneously making it big and playing it down. When they scooped the 2008 Mercury Prize for their double-platinum fourth album, The Seldom Seen Kid, the resultant mainstream attention and big-scale tours were hardly likely to turn the band into commercial showmen. Frontman Guy Garvey might be a glossy magazine cover star nowadays but Elbow’s follow-up, Build A Rocket Boys!, still feels like a labour of love: the sound of a band who’ve spent long hours zealously tinkering in their DIY workshop (opening with a 8-mins song clearly declares some kinda non-mainstream intentions).
Surprising, and much appreciated.
