In order to fully enjoy Krieg und Frieden, all you need is a pair of noise-cancelling headphones and a scene. Any scene will do, really. It could be as simple as watching people wait for transit, or perhaps staring thoughtful outside your window. Where you choose to observe is irrelevant, but don’t skimp out on the headphones. You want the full power and effect of Apparat‘s 10th album, created initially for a stage production of Tolstoy’s Krieg und Frieden (War and Peace). Music for Theatre can transform any everyday mundane occurrence into something full of tension and mystery. That is the power of a good score and this is a great soundtrack for film, theatre or your life.

Les Revenants features Mogwai‘s soundtrack music for the French zombie TV series of the same name. Oftentimes, musical scores lose some of their power when separated from the film or show, but that’s definitely not the case here. It may be only 13 minutes long, but these four songs are packed with haunting melodies and eerie atmospherics and they ranks among their best work over the past few years. Maybe a sneak-peak at the direction Mogwai will be taking for their next album, maybe not. Who cares?

The past 15 years or so have seen video games evolve from crude tests of hand-eye coordination for sedentary children into something approaching an “art” form. With this growth in visual sophistication and narrative complexity, it’s only natural that game developers should strive for their soundtracks to meet the same standards of maturity and seek out talent that can take the aural content of their game to the next level. While HEALTH might seem like an odd choice to score such a high-profile release, given their relative commercial obscurity, their status as noise-punk auteurs makes their selection seem, in retrospect, almost inevitable. Yes, because while HEALTH manage to put their distinctive mark on Max Payne 3 Soundtrack, creating vivid and at times evocative compositions from the contents of their own unique sonic toolkit, they come short of meaningfully reinventing the video game soundtrack as we know it.

Dr. Dee, the new studio album by Blur‘s singer/leader Damon Albarn, is 18 tracks of songs and music inspired by the life of John Dee, mathematician, polymath and advisor to Elizabeth I. The album combines Albarn’s voice with early English choral and instrumentation alongside modern, West African and Renaissance sounds. Dr. Dee has become also an opera created by Albarn himself together with the theatre director Rufus Norris: it was inspired by comic book author Alan Moore, and its debut performance was at the Palace Theatre, Manchester in July 2011, as part of the 2011 Manchester International Festival.

Italian super-combo Calibro 35, with this 3rd release in their discography, scores a masterpiece that eats the previous two in one bite. Ogni Riferimento a Persone Esistenti o a Fatti Realmente Accaduti è Puramente Casuale simply draws a big line between the joke-fun-intentions the projects started with and the actual band, who really can’t avoid to put itself amongst the 5-6 most interesting Italian-ones. Everything was born some years ago with the excitant idea of bringing back to light the music of the 70s b-sides movies, but nowadays the band reveals a stylistic growth that, even without distancing itself from the initial intention, creates something absolutely innovative: funky riffs within elegant jazz ouvertures, blaxploitation-winds and tally-oh vocals which lay themselves down on fuzzy guitars, furious rhythms and delicious scoring. Calibro 35‘s maturity comes just as we expected it: welcome, funny, passionate and really, really ambitious.

Revered Parisian electronic duo Air (Nicolas Godin and JB Dunckel) were asked to compose an original score for the restored version of the classic 1902 silent film Le Voyage Dans La Lune (“A Trip to the Moon”) by Georges Méliès. This new album is the fully realized outcome of that collaboration. Georges Méliès is one of the central characters in Martin Scorsese‘s new blockbuster hit Hugo and his life and work (including the iconic “A Trip to the Moon”) is attracting a whole new wave of interest as a result. Features vocals and lyrics by Victoria Legrand of Beach House on Seven Stars and Au Revoir Simone on Who Am I Now?.

DANGER MOUSE & DANIELE LUPPI
Rome

Some five years in the making, the conception of Rome actually dates back even further, to the 2004 meeting of Brian Burton a.k.a. Danger Mouse and Italian composer/arranger Daniele Luppi. Burton was emerging from the aftermath of the media storm around his Grey Album and beginning work on Gorillaz now multi-platinum and Grammy winning Demon Days. Luppi was amassing acclaim for his album An Italian Story, which paid tribute to the cinematic sounds that shaped his childhood, while writing music for the screen (Sex In The City, Nine) and soon thereafter contributing arrangements to Burton projects including Gnarls Barkley, Dark Night of the Soul and Broken Bells. United in their shared passion for classic Italian film music, Burton and Luppi have created a record like no other: intense songwriting periods both together and apart and travels to Rome during which Luppi reunited for the first time in decades original musicians from the scores of The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and Once Upon a Time in the West. Crucial to the completion of Rome has been the enlistment of two lead vocalists who not only do justice to but complete the three songs each written for a man and a woman. While on tour with Gnarls Barkley, Burton met Jack White and a year later, White recorded his contributions The Rose With The Broken Neck, Two Against One and The World in Nashville. White s counterpart, in a revelatory turn, is Norah Jones, who flew to Burton s L.A. studio from New York to sing on Season’s Trees, Black and Problem Queen. With acclaimed director and photographer Chris Milk brought in as “Visual Director”, half a decade of hard work and unstinting perfectionism would draw to a close as the album and package were completed: it’s an ambitious work with a uniquely modern sound achieved through traditional, vintage means. It is, above all, a fully realized album, perfectly formed and hauntingly beautiful.
Welcome to Rome.

2011 soundtrack recording from the veteran avante-garde alt-rockers. In Spring 2010, Sonic Youth gathered at their Echo Canyon West studio in Hoboken, New Jersey, to watch the rushes of a new film, Simon Werner a Disparu, by French director Fabrice Gobert. They spent the following few weeks recording music which was then shaped as needed to fit the various scenes. For this release, rather than present the small clips of music as used in the film, the band went back in the autumn to the original tapes and re-organized the various pieces for this original soundtrack release, sometimes montaging multiple tracks together, other times extending cues into new sonic realms.

Jonny Greenwood, you know, is the lead guitarist in the British band Radiohead from Abingdon, Oxfordshire, England. He also plays piano, organ, viola, synths, glockenspiel and harmonica, among a host of other devices used to enhance the soundscape of many Radiohead songs. He also uses modular synthesizers, a Korg Kaoss Pad, and a laptop (for voice clips/modulation) on newer tracks. Johnny is also one of the most prominent users of the Ondes Martenot, an early electronic musical instrument with a keyboard and slide. Apart from his work with Radiohead, Greenwood is also a composer and has produced several neo-classical works as part of his tenure as the BBC’s composer-in-residence. He also composed the soundtracks to the films Bodysong (2003) and There Will Be Blood (2007).
Now it’s time for Norwegian Wood, inspired by the homonymous 1987′s novel by Haruki Murakami.

Grammy award winning electronic duo Daft Punk (who takes music as seriously as TRON fans take computer references) scored the upcoming film TRON: Legacy. It’s no accident that the group’s two visionary musicians, Guy-Manuel de Homen-Christo and Thomas Bangalter, are TRON fans too: having grown up with an admiration for the ground-breaking TRON film in the 80s, Daft Punk took on the scoring of the next chapter of the story with extraordinary thought and precision. The critically acclaimed French duo composed and produced the album assembling a symphony of one hundred world class musicians in London and recorded the orchestra at AIR Lyndhurst Studios, Britain’s premier scoring facility.
