MISS KITTIN
Calling from the Stars

under album, bonus, download, electronic, preview, recommended, special offer
One of the enduring characters of electronic dance music, the formidable feline Miss Kittin gets expansive and expressive on her new double album, Calling from the Stars. The first disc boasts impulsively catchy tunes such as single Bassline but there’s also a broodingly romantic air on tracks such as Tears Like Kisses. Disc two reveals surprisingly trancey ambient electronica, with standouts including Sunset Mission. Overall, it’s a poppier contrast to this Grenoble star’s electroclash beginnings: even her characteristic deadpan vocals seem mellower. But don’t worry: it’s still commanding, though.
Miss Kittin hasn’t lost her sharp claws.

THE FLAMING LIPS
The Terror

as heard on radiospin on April 12th, 2013
under album, bonus, download, experimental, indie, preview, recommended, rock
The Terror was produced by The Flaming Lips‘ long-time collaborator Dave Fridmann and the band itself at Tarbox Road Studios. It is comprised of a bunch of original compositions that reflect a darker-hued spectrum than previous works, along with a more inward-looking lyrical perspective than one might expect but then again, maybe not. It s up to you, the listener, to decide what it means to you. In our few words: bad vibes. The Flaming Lips have flirted with with them for a lengthy career. The Terror may be Wayne Coyne’s most concise statement to date. But it’s not clear whether The Flaming Lips are at the deep end of an oscillation or whether this is the logical end of all their work. There are few moments when love triumphs in the absurd back catalog, and when it appeared, Coyne always met it with questions and doubt. The Terror feels like certainty. It offers no hope but in terror: terror as joy beyond all reckoning, a junction of both fear and love, a purity that pours onto us after transgression. Wonderful, in a certain way.

ATOMS FOR PEACE
Amok
No Comments
as heard on radiospin on February 19th, 2013
under album, bonus, download, electronic, experimental, preview, recommended, stream
Atoms for Peace, you should know, is Thom Yorke, Nigel Godrich, Mauro Refosco, Joey Waronker, and Flea. They came together by playing in support of Radiohead‘s frontman’s solo album The Eraser (and maybe that’s the reason why here its almost entirely electronic palette is still a touchstone, even if the organic instrumentation and sometimes fussy arrangements are a technical leap forward). The got a big buzz from those shows and discovered loads of energy from transforming the music from electronic to live, so they carried on for a few days in the studio and decided to make it a loose, on-going thing. Amok is what has come out, highly anticipated by the two singles Default and Judge, Jury and Executioner and the hidden b-side What the Eyeballs Did. This work leaves the sense of something similar to hours of experimental jamming condensed into blistering five-minute workouts. Amok is like the sunrise after the storm and flood of The Eraser, full of dawn light and colour: deceptively simple songs constructed from intricate clockwork parts.

under b-sides, bonus, download, electronic, new wave, preview, recommended, remix, rock, single, special offer, video
Brand, highly-awaited, new single for Depeche Mode, first extract from the upcoming Delta Machine. Heaven projects an intimately dark atmosphere with a fuzzily infectious bass lead and solemn piano echoes. Dave Gahan’s voice sounds as good as ever, especially with his uptick in emotion during the second verse and its grimy longing. The bass-guitar interplay during the aerial chorus is also excellent. Exclusively for RS readers, this maxi-bonus edition features the b-side All That’s Mine and four stunning remixes by Matthew Dear, Blawan, Owlle, and Steps to Heaven.

RS HOT SPOT – #11
Thom Yorke’s Dazed Mix
1 Comment
as heard on radiospin on January 17th, 2013
under bonus, download, electronic, experimental, hot spot, mix, recommended, remix, stream
Thom Yorke has confirmed details of Atoms For Peace‘s debut album Amok, which is set for release on February 25th. Atoms For Peace are the Radiohead frontman’s side project with Flea from Red Hot Chili Peppers, super-producer Nigel Godrich and percussionist Mauro Refosco. We’ve already heard ’round the web the first two singles Default and Judge Jury and Executuioner, plus the stunning b-side What the Eyeballs Did. To celebrate such a colossal issue (and maybe to make the hype around it even bigger), Yorke has set up a mix of some of his favourite tunes, unreleased solo material and remixes.
Suffice to say, it’s essential listening.

From the very first seconds of Awayland, it takes you. A faint drone of organ, joined by eerie strings and a cascade of piano that collectively casts a Hitchcock movie shadow before a hushed voice asks, and then the music obliges by with a similar spectral sweep. Over the course of 11 varied, subtle, complex and plain gorgeous songs Villagers manage to defy any easy categorization of their influences or peers. You can hear fragments of David Axelrod, Jens Lekman, Robert Wyatt and Rufus Wainwright but you could equally add Paddy McAloon, Paul Simon and Randy Newman to the possible roots of this record. And its creator, Conor O’Brien, who played all the instruments on the album (except strings and french horn), is just as captivating in person. You can be sure that Villagers will be around for the long term.

TEEN DAZE

While the definition of the popular subgenre “chillwave” has become more and more convoluted, with nearly every almost-unknown band’s website showcasing serene graphics and with song titles and descriptions that bring about allusions of carefree summer afternoons, it’s hard to take any of it too seriously, queuing nonbelievers to write it off as nothing more than behind on the times. It’s here that Teen Daze seems to flourish under the category, striving for a broader sound. Jamison, the man behind this British-Canadian outfit, instead of relying heavily on sampled drum machine loops, with his second full-length The Inner Mansions, has been able to curate a more thoughtful approach, refining the disco-esque samples of his recent debut All of Us, Together. Features an exclusive Brian Eno‘s cover as the bonus track.

The eighth studio album from …And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead, was recorded in Hanover. Contrary to what the name may imply, Lost Songs is all new material and, according to the band, the music was partly inspired by the apathy to real world events that has plagued the independent music scene during the early 21st century. It was also inspired by artists such as The Cure, KARP, Ros Sereysothea, Human League, Hildegard von Bingen, among others. Includes a special bonus CD with some alternate version of the best tracks.

Swans has spent 30 years of career to make it. It’s the culmination of every previous Swans album as well as any other music Michael Gira‘s ever made, been involved in, or imagined. It’s one frame in an infinite reel: the sounds blur, blend and will eventually fade into something, or maybe nothing, or maybe everything. Swans goal is always the same: ecstasy. Maybe you’ll like, maybe not. It doesn’t matter: you should try to listen to it anyway. The Seer is something you’ve never heard. Or at least something no one has ever dared to record.

More an affectionate eulogy and high-emotion, celebratory wake than a music documentary, this video portrait of the last ever live show by LCD Soundsystem follows singer-songwriter James Murphy as he experiences the dying days of his much-loved band. As previously announced on RS Hot Spots, in April 2011, the electro legends sold out New York’s Madison Square Garden to play what they promise will be their final live show. The four-hour set, featuring Arcade Fire stars as on-stage guests, was a once-in-a-lifetime carnival of punk rock-infused dance and electronica in front of 18,000 fans. Directors Will Lovelace and Dylan Southern imbued the charmingly-shot film with realism and intimacy.

TOY
Toy
Proteges of The Horrors, east London’s TOY are a band whose sonic sweet spot alternates between the psych-rock of the late 60s and the pedal pile-up of late-80s indie. Their tempo, meanwhile, evangelises a slower 70s krautrock. Toy‘s self-titled debut is, then, invariably sown with three decades of deja vu. Still, their full immersion convinces.

Mkaio (a.k.a. Matthew Kammerer) is an independent artist, where “independent” means he’s doing everything himself, where “everything” means everything. And he’s doing it well.
Yes, because Mkaio‘s music does not conform to any style or convention, but rather plays on audio archetypes & expectations, fusing field recordings, acoustic performances, electronic elements & engineering occassionally with vocals and lyrics. A Far Off Horizon is his debut album, an electronic jewel entirely composed, recorded and produced in his bedroom, but escaping to real wider atmospheres then four simple walls. This record is dedicated to Matthew’s best friend, Jennifer Perkins, who he lost to an aggressive and rare form of neuroendocrine cancer: the final three track on the album compose the Suite for Jen, and they contain the first music Mkaio began writing for this record and are the heart of the album.
A warm, cosy and beautiful heart.
