You know: the time is coming. So Depeche Mode help us raising the tension and stopped by Late Show with David Letterman last night, joining the show’s Live On Letterman webcast series. They played an epic 46-minute set, which captured the trio enveloped in their own eerie, yet fascinating element. A wonderful preview of their forthcoming album, Delta Machine.

under album, bonus, folk, indie, live, preview, recommended
From the very first seconds of Awayland, it takes you. A faint drone of organ, joined by eerie strings and a cascade of piano that collectively casts a Hitchcock movie shadow before a hushed voice asks, and then the music obliges by with a similar spectral sweep. Over the course of 11 varied, subtle, complex and plain gorgeous songs Villagers manage to defy any easy categorization of their influences or peers. You can hear fragments of David Axelrod, Jens Lekman, Robert Wyatt and Rufus Wainwright but you could equally add Paddy McAloon, Paul Simon and Randy Newman to the possible roots of this record. And its creator, Conor O’Brien, who played all the instruments on the album (except strings and french horn), is just as captivating in person. You can be sure that Villagers will be around for the long term.

LCD SOUNDSYSTEM
Shut Up and Play the Hits

under best of, bonus, electronic, indie, live, preview, recommended, video
More an affectionate eulogy and high-emotion, celebratory wake than a music documentary, this video portrait of the last ever live show by LCD Soundsystem follows singer-songwriter James Murphy as he experiences the dying days of his much-loved band. As previously announced on RS Hot Spots, in April 2011, the electro legends sold out New York’s Madison Square Garden to play what they promise will be their final live show. The four-hour set, featuring Arcade Fire stars as on-stage guests, was a once-in-a-lifetime carnival of punk rock-infused dance and electronica in front of 18,000 fans. Directors Will Lovelace and Dylan Southern imbued the charmingly-shot film with realism and intimacy.
This is the full audio report.

Stage Whisper

French actress Charlotte Gainsbourg‘s voice is small and unaffected (a stage whisper, indeed), but Beck, her producer-songwriter for 2010′s celebrated IRM, tends toward the opposite extreme. Stage Whisper includes seven studio recordings and 11 live songs and many of the studio tracks come from IRM sessions, an album that The New York Times called “an engrossingly eclectic pop record and a kind of coming-out party: the first time that Ms. Gainsbourg the chanteuse has displayed the charisma of Charlotte Gainsbourg the actress”.

Inní is the definitive Sigur Rós live experience, comprised of a double live album and a seventy-five minute concert film, capturing Sigur Rós last show before their well-documented “indefinite hiatus” at the end of 2008. Recorded by Sigur Rós in-house studio engineer Birgir Jón Birgisson and shot over two nights at London’s Alexandra Palace, at the close of the world tour around their fifth full length album, Með Suð í Eyrum Við Spilum Endalaust. When taken in together, Inní‘s live album and film give us an incredible account of one of the most celebrated and influential rock bands of recent years, showing where they ve come from, where they ve been, and like all things Sigur Rós, where it is they will be going next.

Brand new release from Rivers Cuomo and Co., their first one on Epitaph . Produced by Cuomo and Shawn Everett, Hurley is a high-energy rock album that wastes no time with the first single Memories, an impassioned look at nostalgia with fast tempo, buzzing guitar riffs and killer hooky chorus. Fueled by a new-found sense of independence, Hurley finds the band making some of the most powerful and adventuresome music of their storied career. Known for their quirky album artwork, Weezer have done it yet again. The cover features a simple, yet astonishing close-up of actor Jorge Garcia, which fans of the Lost series will no-doubt find as perplexing as it is fascinating.

Stone Temple Pilots (the Grammy Award-winning band’s first all-new collection in close to a decade) has been produced by Stone Temple Pilots and mixed by Chris Lord-Alge (Green Day, Dave Matthews Band, My Chemical Romance), and it sees one of rock’s biggest bands continuing to explore their enduring approach to music: melding big rock riffs, classic pop hooks, and the restless experimentalism of glam, punk, and psychedelia.
