THE DUKE SPIRIT

The Duke Spirit have spent the past 8 months whipping their new tunes into fighting shape. The seven-year-old U.K. outfit (Liela Moss, Toby Butler, Olly Betts) decided to write their third album as a quartet after guitarist Dan Higgins exited, asking new bassist Marc Sallis to join the squad more recently. The result: supreme focus and a scaled-down sound that cuts to the heart of The Duke Spirit more precisely than ever. After two albums of opaque lyrics and increasingly dense sounds, with Bruiser, The Duke Spirit are breaking down the barriers between their epically melodic blues rock and the rest of us. And the outcome is spectacular.

Biophilia

Set for the first time in the round inside a former Victorian market hall, Björk latest project, Biophilia, feels less like a traditional gig, and more of a demonstration of whizz-bang musicological ideas. Locked in a cage, it looks like the sort of thing that reanimated Frankenstein’s monster. It is an incredible mixture of strange instruments, ancient ones, like the the Tesla coil (a “sharpsichord”, another specially built, Heath Robinsonesque structure that weds a pin barrel organ to two enormous, flower-like ear trumpets), and 21st-century-ones, like the iPad that Björk plays on Dark Matter. Musical director Matt Robertson, meanwhile, orchestrates digitals and unleashes penetrating sub-bass, while eight giant flat-screen TVs should play out themed visual accompaniments to each track.
The physical full-length will be released both as a conventional album with music videos (including a clip directed by frequent Björk collaborator Michel Gondry), and as an “app album” (specifically, a package of 10 apps for the iPad, bundled within one “mother” app: each app will correspond to a different song on the album and will evolve in general makeup over time). Played out as avant-garde multi-platform shock and awe, Biophilia‘s songs, at the cellular level, are ultimately concerned with love, generosity and wonderment.

SPINELESS LAUGH
Comedowns

Spineless Laugh is going to shock your calm autumn with his brand new EP. Comedowns is not properly “new” Spineless Laugh‘s material: it’s a collection of 2006′s recordings (absolutely previously unreleased) slightly re-mastered and re-arranged this summer. All the tracks are recorded live in studio with X-WoF II synthesizer and almost left like the originals, except for a really lite post-production. Spineless Laugh always likes to experiment with real and synthetic sounds and noises and so Comedowns is a strange kind of electronic: asynchronous and obsessive, mechanic and almost industrial, it doesn’t hide its influences (mostly from artists like Autechre or The Orb) and tries to change hiss and creaks into something you would call melody: the perfect soundtrack for your sweetest nightmares. We can say that Comedowns is (musically speaking – all its track are instrumental) a “concept album”: one continuos 40-minutes-long-song semantically subdivided into six sad stories.
You know: Spineless Laugh “is a state of mind, where mind is only a state of uncomprehension”, and Comedowns is the proof of it.

S.C.U.M. (or to give them their full originally-invented-by-would-be-Warhol-assassin Valerie Solanas name, Society For Cutting Up Men: essentially a cheery manifesto about how all men are a bit rubbish, basically) hark back to the clattering industrial sounds of yore, managing to evade the ham-fisted attempts of lesser acts who’ve looked to the era for inspiration. With high-concept sounds and an ace sleeve, Again Into Eyes is a bold debut, and an extremely rewarding experience. Initial listens may paint it as a bit of a pretentious dirge, but dive into it and soon warmth and light flood in. There’s a sense that S.C.U.M. are only just beginning, and the promise here suggests you should mark them for future greatness.

Brazilian dance-punk revelers CSS (Cansei de Ser Sexy) offer their third full-length, La Liberación: the new album features collaborations with Ratatat, Mike Garson (who played piano on David Bowie‘s Aladdin Sane), and Primal Scream‘s Bobby Gillespie on single, Hits Me Like A Rock, one of 2011′s summer anthems. On La Liberación the Brazilian crew’s core of party-starting dance pop, reggae, and punk has expanded to include new sonic tricks and a wider range of lyrical themes. Lead singer Lovefoxxx has grown as a lyricist, maintaining a balance between odes to hedonism with some genuine introspection.

After seven studio albums, various collaborations and countless days on the road over the past 15 years, Wilco tried something new before starting work on its eighth record, The Whole Love: the Chicago band took a vacation. Staying off stage for most of the latter half of 2010 was the longest break from touring that bandleader Jeff Tweedy has had in a career stretching back more than 20 years. The result is 12 stunning songs that showcase Wilco in a new light, on bold rockers, somber acoustic ballads and punchy pop songs, bookended by the propulsive 7-minute opener Art of Almost, and a meditative 12-minute closing track, One Sunday Morning.

dEUS
Keep You Close

At first, an unavoidable statement: please stop comparisons.
Since dEUS re-emerged to the scene in 2005 (whilst recording Pocket Revolution) after a hiatus of 6 years, they haven’t been the same dEUS as on their critically acclaimed 90′s albums. “Old dEUS” was a band of youngsters experimenting, trying to find a sound of their own, amidst all their peers and influences. “Old dEUS” was also a band that was constantly changing, swapping band members, experiencing internal turmoil. To an extent, that was partially the reason why their early stuff was (and still is) so great. The magnificent chaos in some of their old material was the result of this internal turmoil. “New dEUS” is a band of experienced musicians, and now they still have the same band lineup as they started with in 2005. So gone is the chaos, that’s it: the greater confidence in their musical and soundwriting skills means that there is less experimenting with different styles and sounds present. Many have lamented this lack of experimentation on the newer albums, but the loss of this wild “let’s see what we can come up with next”-attitude brings with it a growth in the consistency department. “New dEUS” has produced a couple of really coherent albums, with a clear overall theme or sound. Their latest, Keep You Close, is no exception: so don’t look back and believe, it’s a great album, son of these times.
