Do you remember Jeniferever? The Swedish band is one of our favorite, here at radioSpin (and there at S.Box some years ago): Olle Bilius plays bass for the Uppsala-based combo and now he’s ready to share with us his first solo tracks: a mini EP under the name of Calisota. Everything is written, recorded and produced by Olle himself but the songs features guest appearences from Ida Peterson Hallmén (vocals, piano), Rikard Linder (drums, vocals, percussion), Mattias Jonsson (acoustic guitar) and Ellinor Peterson Hallmén (clarinet). Obviously the EP feels the influence of Jeniferever sound, but that can’t be seen as a fault: Olle writes and plays his solo stuff in a very personal way and gives to Jeniferever‘s atmospheres a new softness.

MANCHESTER ORCHESTRA
Simple Math
Manchester Orchestra‘s third record, Simple Math, comes on the heels of 2009′s acclaimed Mean Everything to Nothing, which Alternative Press called “a masterpiece of intricacy and honesty” in their five-star lead review, and which yielded the Top 10 Modern Rock hit. Dan Hannon, who produced the band s first record and co-produced the second, was once again at the helm for Simple Math, which is a concept record: it s a story about a 23-year old who questions everything from marriage to love to religion to sex. It s chock full of monster riffs, vigorous string arrangements, deep hooks and has miles of melodies that encase a compelling coming-of-age story told in the first person, intimately written and sung by Hull. Simple Math takes Manchester Orchestra to the next level.

THE TOXIC AVENGER

under album, bonus, electronic, preview, recommended, remix
The Toxic Avenger, a.k.a. Simon Delacroix, is an electro thrash producer hailing from Paris, France. Taking cues from intelligent hardcore and punk, all the way to 60’s pop, The Toxic Avenger brings us a unique blend of melodic rage and screaming synths that create a sonic epic audiences can lose their minds to. Toxic has come a long way since 2007’s Superheroes release, where we last left off, our hero’s shimmering, distortioned riffs called for a new generation of dance staples. This colorful and hopeful first move became the theme to Toxic’s rise to power, and helped shape the standards to which we have come to know in the electro community. His debut full length Angst, continues to propel the ever-growing mystique of the man behind the mask. Far from deceased, The Toxic Avenger’s ghostly orchestrations and pulsating rhythms, not to mention his colossal bass lines combine for a dangerous and deadly etherealness that is sure to slay dancefloors around the world straight into the afterlife. Features a lot of guests (Bonjour Afrique, Lexicon, Robert Bruce, Heidi Cannon, Messinian and so on) and a exclusive bonus track only for radioSpin‘s readers.

PEAKING LIGHTS

Peaking Lights always pull its listeners into a faded Polaroid of the Pacific Ocean whenever the ethereal pop sensibilities of vocalist-keyboardist Indra Dunis join forces with the reverberated guitar and twitching sonics of Aaron Coyes: 936 is made of self-rewired household electronics, rewired guitar pedals, and manipulated thrift-store keyboards. This husband/wife duo have toned down the experimental nature of their sound considerably, stripping away the noise to reveal beautiful, luminescent pop music: their releases have always shown huge potential, subtly foreshadowing this new aesthetic.

Demolished Thoughts, the third solo album from Sonic Youth‘s Thurston Moore was produced by Beck and features Mary Lattimore on harp, Samara Lubielski on violin, and Beck on various instruments. Demolished Thoughts is an equally beautiful and brooding work: while there are more than a few tonal similarities to some of your older favorite Moore compositions, the execution this time is nothing short of staggering.

Friendly Fires are Ed MacFarlane (vocals, synths, bass), Edd Gibson (guitar) and Jack Savidge (drums). Hailing from St. Albans where the trio met as teenagers, Friendly Fires‘s intuitive grasp of kinetic art funk, electronic euphoria and stadiumsized anthems has made them one of the most exciting and critically feted bands of the 2010′s: their songs are wonderfully overstuffed with reshuffled and reinvigorated ideas from the 1970s and 80s postpunk guitars, funk beats, sing-along choruses, worldbeat percussion. Pala is all of this stuff.

THE ANTLERS
Burst Apart
The Antlers expand upon their already distinctive voice with Burst Apart, an inspired melding of complex electronic textures and acutely emotive song craft. The eagerly awaited follow-up to 2009′s critically acclaimed Hospice was born out of an intensely collaborative process in which singer/guitarist Peter Silberman, drummer Michael Lerner, and keyboardlst/multl-instrumentalist Darby Cicci fully immersed themselves in sonic experimentation, working as a tightly knit creative unit to fulfill a shared musical vision. But beware: while The Antlers‘ ardent passion for musical exploration resonates throughout the album, it expertly sustains a careful balance between the cerebral and the visceral.

ARNAUD REBOTINI
Someone Gave Me Religion
New album from the half of Blackstrobe, Arnaud Rebotini, who left for a moment his fellow Ivan Smagghe to release his second full length. The album opens with over ten minutes of ambient grooves which are unlike anything you’re likely to have heard in years: a long, elegiac composition recalling the chill-out zone at a bygone rave. It’s a warning: take a deep breath before being swept away by eight tracks that span Detroit and Berlin, Front 242 and Carl Craig linking them via soaring trance and carefullycrafted minimal sounds. The sound of the 90s, the sound of the new millennium. This record will set pulses and heart beats racing on club dancefloors the world over with its music created with some legendary analog stuff like TR-808, SH-101, TR-909, TB-303 and Juno 60.

Is This Hyperreal? is the new record in the thankfully ever-growing back-catalogue of digital hardcore artists Atari Teenage Riot. 12 years on from their last studio release, this record is just as hard-hitting and intense as the material they were producing in the mid 90s: the same highly political, anti-fascist views and infusing an electronic soundtrack with a clear punk-infused punch.

DANGER MOUSE & DANIELE LUPPI
Rome

as heard on radiospin on May 10th, 2011
under album, experimental, folk, indie, preview, recommended, soundtrack
Some five years in the making, the conception of Rome actually dates back even further, to the 2004 meeting of Brian Burton a.k.a. Danger Mouse and Italian composer/arranger Daniele Luppi. Burton was emerging from the aftermath of the media storm around his Grey Album and beginning work on Gorillaz now multi-platinum and Grammy winning Demon Days. Luppi was amassing acclaim for his album An Italian Story, which paid tribute to the cinematic sounds that shaped his childhood, while writing music for the screen (Sex In The City, Nine) and soon thereafter contributing arrangements to Burton projects including Gnarls Barkley, Dark Night of the Soul and Broken Bells. United in their shared passion for classic Italian film music, Burton and Luppi have created a record like no other: intense songwriting periods both together and apart and travels to Rome during which Luppi reunited for the first time in decades original musicians from the scores of The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and Once Upon a Time in the West. Crucial to the completion of Rome has been the enlistment of two lead vocalists who not only do justice to but complete the three songs each written for a man and a woman. While on tour with Gnarls Barkley, Burton met Jack White and a year later, White recorded his contributions The Rose With The Broken Neck, Two Against One and The World in Nashville. White s counterpart, in a revelatory turn, is Norah Jones, who flew to Burton s L.A. studio from New York to sing on Season’s Trees, Black and Problem Queen. With acclaimed director and photographer Chris Milk brought in as “Visual Director”, half a decade of hard work and unstinting perfectionism would draw to a close as the album and package were completed: it’s an ambitious work with a uniquely modern sound achieved through traditional, vintage means. It is, above all, a fully realized album, perfectly formed and hauntingly beautiful.
Welcome to Rome.

Wild Beasts release their third full length, entitled Smother. Their 2009 album Two Dancers was critically acclaimed and even earned them a nomination in the prestigious Mercury Awards. A year and a half later, Smother reveals a much more mature band. They’ve kept their distinct sound intact: oscillating falsetto and baritone vocals, lyrical wit, and a penchant for seedier topics. However, this album incorporates rich electronic textures and a subtlety of melody not heard in their earlier work.
Wild Beasts fans will not be disappointed.

WHOMADEWHO
Knee Deep
Copenhagen’s WhoMadWho trio (formerly on Gomma) make their Kompakt debut with third album Knee Deep. It’s by far one of the most rock/pop oriented releases on the label for some time, but their guitar/drum/vocal equation is well balanced with enough electronics to warrant their signing. The trio crafted the album in a “semi-built hotel” in their home city, and ended up with two sets of quite different songs. Knee Deep would appear to be the more reflective, sombre side of them, apparently influenced by marriage breakups, label disputes and so on. But that’s not to say these aren’t dancefloor-ready.
