Ladies and gentlemen please welcome back Cut/Copy. Ever the gracious houseguests, they’re returning armed with their 3rd and most ambitious work yet, Zonoscope. This is Cut/Copy boiled down to their purest form: a suite of futuristic visions built upon primal rhythm tracks. It is at once their most immediate work to date but also their most sonically exquisite. Zonoscope was dreamt in the comedown of In Ghost Colours, the album which cemented Cut/Copy as a global sensation. Recorded over a 6 month and mixed in Atlanta by Ben H. Allen (Animal Collective, Gnarls Barkley, Deerhunter), Zonoscope paints a mesmerizing picture, conjured by a band at the height of their powers.

Alternative rock band The Boxer Rebellion rose to prominence in 2009 with the success of its second album Union. The album became the first self-released album to enter the Billboard Top 100 Album Charts and the attention landed the group an on-screen appearance in the motion picture Going the Distance. The group followed up a busy 2010 with its third album, recorded at Peter Gabriel‘s Real World Studios with producer Ethan Johns. The first edition and limited run of The Cold Still is a hard-bound booklet, designed by Icelandic visual artist Jónas Valtýsson, which contains all of the album’s lyrics set across 12 beautifully-artworked pages: this is a must-have for any serious music buyer.

2011 soundtrack recording from the veteran avante-garde alt-rockers. In Spring 2010, Sonic Youth gathered at their Echo Canyon West studio in Hoboken, New Jersey, to watch the rushes of a new film, Simon Werner a Disparu, by French director Fabrice Gobert. They spent the following few weeks recording music which was then shaped as needed to fit the various scenes. For this release, rather than present the small clips of music as used in the film, the band went back in the autumn to the original tapes and re-organized the various pieces for this original soundtrack release, sometimes montaging multiple tracks together, other times extending cues into new sonic realms.

Mine Is Yours is the third full-length studio album from Californian four-piece Cold War Kids. The album was produced by Jacquire King, who has previously worked with Modest Mouse, Tom Waits, Norah Jones and Kings Of Leon. This latest release has a much more expansive sound than the band’s previous work, with complicated and sprawling arrangements taking the place of the stripped-back simplicity of their earlier albums.

After releasing one of pop music’s most lacerating sociopolitical broadsides ever (1979 debut Entertainment!), featuring one of the most unconventionally aggressive guitarists ever (Andy Gill), this immeasurably influential U.K. post-punk quartet set a standard almost equaled by their own early ’80s releases and rarely matched elsewhere. Twenty years since their last album of new material, Content, Gill and vocalist Jon King spit out splintered riffs and skewered tropes that approximate the band’s peak on grabby party-starters and mesmerizing midtempo grooves.

Margot and the Nuclear So and So’s formed in Indianapolis, IN in 2006. The band quickly gained a strong following, and after heavy US touring, Artemis Records signed the band to release The Dust of Retreat. Margot released their sophomore record on Epic Records, with whom they signed in 2007. Animal! was released in 2008 amidst band/label controversy; two albums were actually released, Animal! was the band’s track listing, and Not Animal was the label’s. With 2010′s Buzzard, Margot brings a more aggressive and streamlined sound.

Goose play electronic stompers that are gregarious and muscular, as though their beats are slapping high fives while bounding across the dance floor. Their second album, Synrise, balances its big beat raveups with statelier minimalist comedowns and excels at throwing all sorts of little extras into the band’s (usually) short tunes: unexpected surprises pop up on nearly every track. That’s really the trick with dance albums, isn’t it? Keeping the living room listeners tuned in even when we’re not dancing?
Anyway, not that you can’t dance to Synrise: quite the opposite, you should.

MOGWAI
Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will

under album, post-rock, preview, recommended

Mogwai have always seemed to have a much better sense of humor than most of their peers: while most of the bands that sound like them opt for either brooding, austere soundscapes or breathtakingly ethereal musical collages, the Scottish five-piece have a knack for poking fun at everything from the silliness of the genre they’re often lumped into (call it post-rock if it is the best you can come up with). And so, it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that the band’s seventh studio LP, Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will, is simultaneously divergent from everything the band has ever done and very much the same Mogwai who shook up the art-rock world over a decade and a half ago. Mogwai have hardly ever been as accessible as they are on this new release: only three of the 10 songs break the six-minute mark and when they do, you’ll hardly notice.
There’s more than enough vintage Mogwai to go around, however: don’t worry.

ERRORS
Come Down with Me

under album, electronic, indie, instrumental, post-rock, preview, recommended, remix

Glasgow four-piece Errors could easily layer on the cheese and craft party-time hits for tonic wine-swilling types; that they’ve the ability to do so isn’t in doubt. But by refining their sound to incorporate as much krautrock-inspired economy as New York-indebted dance-gets-mathy overtones, the band have carved a niche that, while narrow, is considerably deeper than expectations decreed. If Errors’ last album, It’s Not Something but It Is Like Whatever, lacked anything it was a natural heart: it felt cold and wonderfully clinical. But not here: where once they chattered like robots, Errors have grafted real flesh to synthetic bone, threaded veins through tissue and grown a skin that isn’t so thick that admirers can’t glimpse the inner-workings.
Come Down with Me is the machine made man: a machine (and a man, of course) highly recommended by Mogwai, who own their label and hosted them in the last european tour.

Tits & Clits is a Hungarian electronic-music band, composed by Benjámin Kalászi and Csaba Bernáth. Initiated for fun in 2007, this group has quickly proven itself and continues today to grow over and over again, by doing lots of concerts, especially in Eastern Europe. Tits & Clits are known above all thanks to their re-interpretations/re-works of some famous indie-rock-pop tunes: The Remixes an almost complete example of what they’re able to do.
