Surfing the Void is the second studio album by 2007′s Mercury Music Prize winners, the Klaxons. Shedding the Nu Rave tag by working with esteemed producer Ross Robinson (Slipknot, Korn, At The Drive-In), the group revel in more dense and cosmic influences ranging from progressive rock to space-age folk and kraut-rock. Constructing vast and imaginative soundscapes with their trademark harmonies and melodies, thisis their most adventurous and boldest recording to date.

The Decemberists‘ new album The King Is Dead is a set of 10 concise, country-based songs, marking a deliberate turn towards simplicity after the band’s wildly ambitious and widely acclaimed 2009 song-cycle The Hazards of Love. Produced once again by Tucker Martine, The King Is Dead features special guest appearances by Americana luminary Gillian Welch on seven tracks and legendary R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck on three tracks.

Have you ever thought, “Hey, I wonder what Built to Spill songs would sound like re-imagined as synth-filled, 12-inch remixes from the 1980s”? Of course you have: who hasn’t?
Now you can go out your curiosity with The Electronic Anthology Project, the rather odd but really awesome brainchild of Built to Spill singer/guitar god Doug Martsch and bassist Brett Nelson. Quite simply, the duo has re-recorded seven Built to Spill songs “in the vein of the 80’s 12-inch remix”: each song even has a new title that is an anagram of its original.
Pretty crazy.

In 2007 Luca Sammartin, young producer from Vicenza (Italy) also involved into some other really interesting projects such as Gleamer and ContaineR, recorded some tracks under the moniker Acidhead: dreamy atmospheres wistfully projected towards the future, soft IDM sometimes recalling Apparat. Ventriloquizzing

under album, electronic, indie, preview, recommended
Using the concept that ventriloquist dummies are creepy things that indicate split personalities as a jumping off point, English electronic krautrock disciples Fujiya & Miyagi have crafted what they say is their darkest and most propulsive album to date with Ventriloquizzing, their first album since 2008′s Lightbulbs. The quartet took this concept to an extreme, commissioning the creation of actual ventriloquist dummies in their likenesses. The album is also the first time the band has loosened their self-producing reins, bringing in Thom Monahan (Vetiver, Silver Jews, Devendra Banhart) to help man the boards.

SKY ARCHITECTS

under EP, post-rock, preview, recommended, rock, submitted
A lot has changed, since five young guys recorded their self titled debut-EP Sky Architects in 2008, which demonstrated a band that knew how to construct good melodies within an epic sphere. Where the debut showed how diverse the band could sound, their new record The Reflection shows a band with a more coherent and direct sound, but without compromising with their love for the epic melodies. Sky Architects isn’t post-rock, metal, indie or pop, but a hybrid of all of these genres and more. First and foremost, Sky Architects play with their hearts, and it is therefore up to the individual listener to create their own experience of the sounds that have been created.

SIMIAN MOBILE DISCO

The third studio album from British tech-heads Simian Mobile Disco, Delicacies, is, naturally and hilariously, made up of tracks named after bizarre foods that the band members sampled during their travels all over the world. Musically, the album is said to embrace the darker/clubbier side of the band’s already darkened, clubby sound. As a nice bonus, Delicacies comes with an extra CD that mixes all the songs into a seamless studio edit.
Only for radioSpin readers, a third CD is available, with the album promo mixed by Spineless Laugh who cut the songs in small parts and put them in the blender for a new way of cooking SMD menu.

Jonny Greenwood, you know, is the lead guitarist in the British band Radiohead from Abingdon, Oxfordshire, England. He also plays piano, organ, viola, synths, glockenspiel and harmonica, among a host of other devices used to enhance the soundscape of many Radiohead songs. He also uses modular synthesizers, a Korg Kaoss Pad, and a laptop (for voice clips/modulation) on newer tracks. Johnny is also one of the most prominent users of the Ondes Martenot, an early electronic musical instrument with a keyboard and slide. Apart from his work with Radiohead, Greenwood is also a composer and has produced several neo-classical works as part of his tenure as the BBC’s composer-in-residence. He also composed the soundtracks to the films Bodysong (2003) and There Will Be Blood (2007).
Now it’s time for Norwegian Wood, inspired by the homonymous 1987′s novel by Haruki Murakami.

Rolling Blackouts

as heard on radiospin on December 14th, 2010
under experimental, hip hop, indie, pop, preview, rock
It’s been nearly three and a half years since their last album, but next February The Go! Team returns with a new full-length, Rolling Blackouts. Frantic, seesaw brass stabs and delay-pedal vapor trails: this new album is epic and bratty, subtle and sweet. From the two-minute opening slammer of T.O.R.N.A.D.O. to the album’s title track featuring Bethany Cosentino (Best Coast), it’s all restless and relentless energy. Cosentino also lends vocals to Buy Nothing Day, a hyper girls-in-the-garage jangle, while rising Tampa rapper Dominique Young Unique dominates the psych hip-hop call and response of Voice Yr Choice and goes tag-team on the string-led space race of Apollo Throwdown. Deerhoof‘s Satomi Matsuzaki leads the way on Secretary Song, evoking an asymmetrical Tokyo office with elevators opening on the beat, typing in time and phones ringing in rhythm. With Ready to Go Steady, the Team delivers their first straight-ahead love song, a nimble pocket-rocket symphony.

Long-awaited debut album for We Have Band, who spent most of 2009 touring the world and the rest of the time in the studio with producer Gareth Jones (Grizzly Bear, Interpol, Depeche Mode, These New Puritans). They won Glastonbury Festival‘s 2009 Emerging Talent Contest. Pounding drum machines, dirty basslines, even dirtier synths and a neat line in hypnotic, Hot Chip-style vocal hooks, WHB‘s sweaty electro is simply irresistible.
