Two CD collection from the britpop band led by vocalist Brett Anderson and featuring guitarist Bernard Butler, now a renowned producer. Features all of Suede‘s biggest hits showcasing the group’s early material with outstanding new production. This is the only Suede hits compilation that has been endorsed by the band. During the band’s early years, they effectively instigated a new focus on British guitar music which had been largely eclipsed by grunge before their emergence: their inexorable rise saw them become one of the biggest groups in the country, a success which was replicated in many countries around the world. In 1999, after five studio albums, the group split. They returned triumphantly in March this year, playing three incredible and critically acclaimed shows including London’s Royal Albert Hall in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust.

CHICKEN LIPS
Experience of Malfunction
Chicken Lips regroup with a new album, now including new member Jonny Spencer on vocals, alongside the old lineup of Steve Kotey, Dean Meredith and Andrew Meecham. Their trademark analogue style is still very much intact, deploying classic synthesizers and drum machines with their cheeky floor filling sound: let’s get an Experience of Malfunction.

After 3 years, alt rock trio The Wireflys have just released their first full length album The World We Live. Over this time, the band has surfaced only to play a few live shows, sharing the stage with the likes of British India, Grafton Primary, Kisschasy and Bluejuice. This debut (described as “powerful, harmonious, heart thumping and epic”) has been produced by the bands vocalist/bassist Chris Tester, and while illustrating inventive focus during production, captures the bands live energy and dynamic.

Grammy award winning electronic duo Daft Punk (who takes music as seriously as TRON fans take computer references) scored the upcoming film TRON: Legacy. It’s no accident that the group’s two visionary musicians, Guy-Manuel de Homen-Christo and Thomas Bangalter, are TRON fans too: having grown up with an admiration for the ground-breaking TRON film in the 80s, Daft Punk took on the scoring of the next chapter of the story with extraordinary thought and precision. The critically acclaimed French duo composed and produced the album assembling a symphony of one hundred world class musicians in London and recorded the orchestra at AIR Lyndhurst Studios, Britain’s premier scoring facility.

BLOOD RED SHOES
Fire Like This
Fire Like This is the second album from Brighton-based two-piece Blood Red Shoes. Heavily influenced by American underground and punk music, Blood Red Shoes often distance themselves from the current British music scene and consider themselves part of the tradition of US punk bands. Fire Like This was recorded with producer Mike Crossey, who has previously worked with the Arctic Monkeys and The Enemy. The album is preceded by the single Colours Fade and includes a Japan-only bonus track.

DNTEL is the side project of Jimmy Tamborello, a.k.a. one half of The Postal Service (with Ben Gibbard of Death Cab For Cutie being the other half). After Parties is his last release: a two parts EP of wonderful IDM. Listening to both of these EP’s separately is a bit hard as they both complement each other. After Parties 1 has a mellow feel to it, and works great if you’re in the mood to chill out. After Parties 2 is more upbeat and has The Postal Service feel every fan should love.

So here we are again: new release for Girl Talk and again we can’t do without celebrating Greg Gillis‘ mix-and-match skills. Yes, again we have to say that the beauty of Girl Talk‘s All Day is its perfect blend of post-modern absurdity and pure entertainment: mixing and morphing among a deep vein of ’80s pop classics, ’90s alternative and ’00s hip-hop tracks, Gillis’ new musical Frankenstein project recycles many of the hooks he used on his first LP (Jackson 5, Bananarama, Ludacris and Beastie Boys) Girl Talk demonstrates (again) that his ability to churn out infectious mash-ups capable of turning even the stiffest blokes into dancing machines has grown to heaven.

TEENGIRL FANTASY
7AM

as heard on radiospin on November 22nd, 2010
under album, electronic, indie, pop, preview
Over the course of the last year, a lot of genuinely interesting groups and artists have emerged from the “Blog-house” scene that took shape towards the end of the last decade. Joining the likes of Memoryhouse, Gold Panda and Neon Indian in producing squelchy, pastel-hued dance-pop, the already prolific Teengirl Fantasy have set the internet alight with Cheaters, the first single from their debut album 7 AM. Burying vocal samples from the Love Committee’s little-known Seventies soul track Cheaters Never Win under layers of static, synths and an old-school Chicago house beat, the effect is both euphoric and disorienting. Sounding like an unfamiliar take on an old favourite, or a big-name male diva whose name you can’t quite put your finger on, belting out guest vocals on an indie dance track, it’s one of 2010′s best songs, an instant classic that has put this full-length at the top of many people’s “most anticipated” lists.

KAT BOELSKOV Amateur

“If you want something done, do it yourself”, the old wise man said.
Kat Boelskov did it, and it’s well done: Danish singer-songwriter’s debut album Amateur is a sort of box randomly filled with what you could call electro-pop-rock and a dash of acoustics and jazz, inspired by Kate Bush, Dragonette, 90′s Bjørk, Sia, Fiona Apple, Fever Ray and The Knife amongst many others. In other words, the dark and sweet sound of Amateur is a genre-confused combination of electronica, rock, and acoustics, which are nevertheless bound firmly together by the raw, emotional voice and feeling of unashamed honesty which runs throughout the album. Instead of calling on professional help, Kat chose to stay 100% in charge, handling every step of the writing, recording and production herself, resulting in a deeply personal piece of work.
A fantastic, enjoyable, lovely personal piece of work.

HOLY SONS Survivalist Tales!

![]()

Emil Amos, world renowned as drummer of the illustrious experimental rock groups Om and Grails, has an increasingly prolific, though relatively unknown, solo career under the moniker Holy Sons. Home recording over 1000 songs since the project’s inception in 1992, Amos has spent the better part of the last two decades honing his song writing and production skills over a wide swath of genres in a mission to capture his internal world sonically. Survivalist Tales! is Holy Sons‘ 9th record, and represents the apex of Emil Amos‘ obsession to push stylistic genres to their breaking point while wrenching psyche-anthems out of the darkest frontiers of self-confrontation. The songs are a seemingly impossible blend of nightmarish Blade Runner-esque moog music with the darkest side of 70′s easy-listening psyche and feature some of the most unabashedly soaring choruses Amos has ever put to tape. Combining avant-sound collage with lyrics culled from the hard-won truths of self-exploration, Survivalist Tales! builds a beautiful imagining of future music.

PAUL SMITH Margins
![]()

Newcastle’s Maxïmo Park were among the more thoughtful bands to emerge during the UK post-punk/new wave revival of the mid-00s, due in no small part to the acutely observed lyrics of front man Paul Smith. A year on from his group’s rather disappointing third album Quicken the Heart, Smith is back with a collection of self-penned songs recorded with a collection of north-east friends including Field Music’s David Brewis on bass. This is apparently just a side project rather than the beginning of a solo career (Maxïmo Park are currently working on new material) and Margins doesn’t represent much of a departure away from their established template.
Nevertheless, as an overall package, maybe this solo release struggles to rise above the ordinary, but fans of Maxïmo Park will not be disappointed, and also the ones approaching Smith’s songwriting for the first time will surely enjoy it.

If Kasabian took down their Screamadelica-style electro decorations, what would be at the core? Alternatively, what would it sound like if Liam Gallagher fronted Buddy Guy’s live band, his iconic whine backed up by bolshie Chicago blues? Or again, are you able to imagine The Black Keys playing Black Rebel Motorcycle Club? Well, the answer is Brussels’ The Black Box Revelation. As a two piece (Jan Paternoster and Dries Van Dijck), this stripped down roots-rock, like that of The White Stripes, is surely a dish best served live. Nevertheless, Silver Threats makes for straightforward, irony-free listening, and fills a hole in the market.

Brand new album from German trio Saroos. On the Odd Nosdam-produced See Me Not, members Florian Zimmer (Iso68, Jersey), Christoph Brandner (Lali Puna, Console) and Max Punktezahl (The Notwist, Contriva) achieve a rare synchronicity that lends their poly-genre instrumental compositions an uncanny air, like something beamed in from a different dimension. Equal parts krautrock, musique concrete, post-rock and no wave, the album is both timeless and rooted in history, noisy and bound to a groove, completely foreign and, yet, surprisingly familiar.

OH NO! OH MY! People Problems
![]()

Austin-based Oh No! Oh My! after much time passing while writing and recording, is now releasing a collection of 12 brand new songs upon the world, to collectively be called People Problems. Because most problems in life stem from people, and what better thing to write about than people, and our problems with them? A fairly dramatic stylistic departure from the previous music Oh No! Oh My! was known for, the songs of People Problems are made up in a much more somber, yet grand scale, which include arrangements for a string quartet. Recorded sporadically over 8 months in Texas at Public Hi-Fi by Jeff Byrd and Brad Bell, People Problems it’s big, it’s loud, it’s quiet, it’s short, it’s long.
It is all these things, and more.
