Releases of July, 2010:
AEROPLANE We Can’t Fly
![]()

Thanks to an extremely high-profile remix portfolio in the last 2 Years (remixes for Grace Jones, Robbie Williams, MGMT, Hercules & Love Affair, Sebastian Tellier, Lindstrøm & Christabelle, Friendly Fires, Au Revoir Simone), an extremely strong blog presence and furious DJ performances, may be at We Can’t Fly probably one of the greatest voltage expected to speak with electronica albums of the year.
The Belgian team of producers has become a one-man project, consisting of Vito De Luca. Colleague Stephen Fasano left the duo become known as Aeroplane few weeks ago, in all friendship, to get music to reorient.
We Can’t Fly is an impressively diverse album become: various influences from disco and 80′s Electronica, to the Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Tangerine Dream or Italian pop music influenced the creation of Aeroplane. Aptly, perhaps, the definition would be “Psychedelic Electronica”, but it would be the varied genre mix only enough justice.

ARCADE FIRE The Suburbs
![]()

If 2007’s Neon Bible was supposed to be Arcade Fire’s difficult second album, it didn’t show. Top marks from a cavalcade of critical tomes saw the Montreal septet’s sequel to their breakthrough debut long-player of 2004, Funeral, received with just as much reverence as its predecessor. So what of The Suburbs, arriving after another three-year period which saw its makers record in both their hometown and New York?
Even on a cursory listen, a water-testing foray into its 16 tracks, it’s immediately apparent that this is an album unlike either that came before it: written, arranged, performed, and produced by the Arcade Fire and co-produced by Markus Dravs, The Suburbs will surprise you.

MINTZKOV
Rising Sun, Setting Sun
After the tight and straightforward sounding 360° album, Mintzkov intended to open up their music a little more. On their third full length recording, Rising Sun, Setting Sun, the fivesome from Antwerp reaches out for a more streamlined and more dancefloor orientated sound, in which the role of keyboard player Pascal Oorts has become more prominent.

CHLOÉ One in Other
![]()

Chloé‘s One in Other picks up where the Parisian DJ/producer’s 2007 album The Waiting Room left off, with creepy-crawly 4/4 beats suffused in a murk of analog synthesizers and electric guitars. It’s a droning, swirling sound at once intimate and alien. That ambiguity is only heightened by the way Chloé uses vocals, looping and layering them into swarms of hisses and wails. Even on a relatively upbeat, pop-oriented tracks, the nether regions of the song are abuzz in phantasmal whispers.
An album that polishes her aesthetic even further for an even more focused, impressive result.

MYSTERY JETS Serotonin
![]()

After stripping away much of the excess on their lovelorn, warmly-received 2008 album Twenty One, Serotonin sees the Mystery Jets mapping out entirely new musical territories with their synthesizer-fueled perfect pop, without missing out their dark, hallucinatory side, where you can hear echoes of ELO, 10CC, Fleetwood Mac and Supertramp rubbing up against the band s own idiosyncratic, very British, psychedelic sensibility.

Sacramento-based dance-punk band !!! reeled off three albums in the previous decade, starting with 2001′s !!! and on through perhaps their best work, 2007′s Myth Takes: what started as a raw, funky sound turned into a calculated, driving force.
!!! had really created their own genre, complete with a sound unabashedly uniquely their own. But their latest album, Strange Weather, Isn’t It? stack up against their impressive, previous resumé.

ISOBEL CAMPBELL & MARK LANEGAN Hawk
![]()

Mark Lanegan has found his perfect foil in Scottish chanteuse Isobel Campbell and the same could be said of her on their latest album Hawk which features a double billing. Lanegan and Campbell have perfected their Lee Hazelwood and Nancy Sinatra style of songwriting and the sound is more reflective of collaboration than their previous effort Ballad of the Broken Seas which felt ham-fisted in spots. If you’re a fan of Lanegan’s output, consider yourself lucky, as Hawk is more of a representative effort after his woefully underused stint as the other half of Greg Dulli’s tacky Gutter Twins. Hawk was self-produced by Isobel Campbell who seems to have taken note of Lanegan’s style of well worn Americana. Hawk also features guest spots by rising folk singer Willy Mason on two tracks as well as James Iha and jazz musician Bill Wells.

Deathpodal is the name of a project led by Alastair J. Chivers from Glasgow, Scotland: something that stays between noise and post-rock, without forgetting the beauty of a sweet leading melody.
Alastair plays all the instruments while recording, although he uses a backing band when he plays live. Exu Wow is his debut album: only five songs, but a concise and robust statement of intent where Sonic Youth try to turn into Mogwai, and vice-versa.
I think you should check it out.

DIRTY PROJECTORS & BJÖRK Mount Wittenberg Orca
![]()

Björk and Dirty Projectors aren’t known for informality. They move freely, but within obsessively constructed worlds. They make the questionable choices lesser artists would be afraid to, and they do it on their own clock. But their reputation for being anal-retentive and self-contained is one of the reasons Mount Wittenberg Orca (a recording of a song cycle performed last May for Housing Works, a charity and chain of upmarket thrift stores in New York) is so refreshing. Dave Longstreth, the brain and foreman of Dirty Projectors, wrote the songs in less than a month, and the group rehearsed together for only a week. The songs were mostly recorded live and in the same room and the result is 20 minutes of music that sounds more dressed-down than anything Björk or Dirty Projectors have put out before.

Barely acknowledging a single musical influence post-1972 has worked out fine so far for Liverpool-based beat combo The Coral, producing numerous sublime pastoral pop moments and heady, patchouli-scented wigouts over the course of their five previous albums. Butterfly House tramps further into their bucolic retro haven where no nasty 21st-century references can touch them and captures a consistently lovely, wistful atmosphere throughout.

WILD NOTHING
Gemini
Nostalgia is both powerful and deceptive. Jack Tatum, the solo force behind Virginia-based Wild Nothing’s debut album Gemini seems to be well aware of this. Draped and drizzled in hazy-gazey reverb, Gemini will most likely be the summery soundtrack for newly budding romances of timid star-crossed lovers the world over. In many ways, Gemini is a séance of sorts and Tatum its medium, channeling the ghosts of shoegaze past and paying homage to the moody, melodramatic spirits of ’80s and ’90s legends.

Kasper Bjørke has had a lengthy career, and here’s his second full-length album. He comes from the heart of the thriving Copenhagen electronic scene along with Trentemøller. After more than a decade as a busy producer and DJ, Kasper has released his work on labels like Plant Music, Fine, Thugfucker and V2 and received a Danish Music Award as Best Producer for the well-known project Filur.
Standing On Top of Utopia is a multi-genre journey through glittering synthesizer jams, warm throbbing post-disco trips, dark pop songs and haunting minimal house with an analogue feel. Bjørke employs a handful of Danish singers (Louise Foo, who is sister to Sharin of The Ravonettes, Tomas Höffding of WhoMadeWho, and Jacob Bellens), instrumentalists like Davide Rossi (Coldplay, Røyksopp), and American musicians Kap10Kurt and Dominique Keegan.

Over the course of three albums in nearly a decade’s time, The Books have grown to become one of modern music’s most genuine innovators. The Way Out continues The Books‘ tradition of meticulous, existential songcraft, infusing the playfully surreal elements of previous albums with a humorous, childlike excitement. Produced and recorded as always in The Books‘ home studios, The Way Out expands on the charm and intimacy of past endeavors with a deeper emotional resonance and an ever-impressive marriage of seemingly disparate sound worlds.

ISAN Glow in the Dark Safari Set

under album, ambient, electronic, IDM, indie, post-rock, preview
![]()

If you turn out the light and suddenly find yourself transported to a dream world, fantastic, with brilliant colours, then it generally means that Isan has recorded another good album. At this stage in their career, after thirteen years fighting to stay on deck and not disappear as victims of trends, the duo shouldn’t have anything asked of them other than that they make an effort, do their job well, and that the album that they end up delivering to us be faithful to their signs of identity: transparent, ingenuous, charming IDM. A total of four years have passed since Plans Drawn in Pencil and Glow in the Dark Safari Set arrives unexpectedly, because Isan aren’t people to draw attention to themselves, making their way around the musical scene discretely, everything they record patiently rendered until they’re sure that it’s perfectly finished and in order. They are neither infallible, nor are they revolutionaries, but their music maintains the ability to transform space, to make the room that you are in seem warmer, allowing the memory to wander back to periods that you thought were forgotten, and in the best cases, it takes you back to the happy days of your childhood and that special summer. There is something unchanging in what Antony Ryan and Robin Saville do: they continue to be masters of the electronic song. Their pieces continue to be candid melodies that enter the ears with an admirable smoothness.
This new album is no exception.
