Releases of June, 2010:
WAVVES
King of the Beach
Most everyone by now knows the story of Wavves, the one-man garage surf band composed of San Diego’s Nathan Williams. Hyped by music blogs, Williams became the Great White Hope of 2009. Then he played live and when he didn’t live up to expectations, his star came crashing down as quickly as it rose. It looks like Williams’ fortunes are on the rise again. For his second album, King of the Beach, he hooked up with Dennis Herring, the producer of the last two Modest Mouse albums, so that it sounds pretty indie.

Burning is the first concert film from Glasgow, Scotland’s post-rock stalwarts Mogwai. Culled from footage shot during their April 2009 3-night stint at the Music Hall of Williamsburg, Burning was directed by Vincent Moon and Nataniel La Souanec and captures the Mogwai‘s visceral live show in high-contrast black and white. Companion live record Special Moves adds extra songs that were not included in the film.

KULA SHAKERPilgrim’s Progress
![]()

2010 release from the British band led by Crispin Mills.
Kula Shaker burst onto the music scene in 1996 with the release of K, one of the fastest selling debut albums ever. Imploding after the follow up, they disappeared for nearly 10 years until a very low key album in 2007 signaled their semi-return. Pilgrim’s Progress showcases a more mature sound, drawing on folk, ’60s R&B and traditional influences as well as their signature psychedelia. Kula Shaker have retained a very loyal and dedicated fanbase who have stayed with the band since the ’90s and have been waiting for this new album for a very long time.
Strange folk, that’s it.

Another astonishing release from the former Faith No More vocalist, an Italian language rock-meets orchestra hybrid. Recorded at a series of European performances including an outdoor concert in a Northern Italian piazza, this album features traditional Italian Pop songs as well as a rendition of Ennio Morricone’s Deep Down. Mike Patton worked with a 30-piece orchestra and choir to create the uniquely new Mondo Cane sound. Patton’s body of work continues to evolve and grow with a wide range of bands and solo projects including Mr. Bungle, Faith No More, Fantomas, Tomahawk, Peeping Tom and most recently as a film composer and voice actor.

Shadows is the ninth studio album from the Scottish power-pop band Teenage Fanclub. Five years since their 2005 release Man-Made, the Glaswegians wind down the jangly-pop of previous albums here, maturing towards dulcet harmonised rocksongs. However the alternating songwriters of Norman Blake, Raymond McGinley and Gerard Love provide the band’s trademark melodic, hook-filledsound on single Baby Lee.

TOKYO POLICE CLUBChamp

In internet years, Tokyo Police Club are just about ready for retirement. As a group of underage buddies from the Toronto suburbs, their antsy take on post-Strokes rock was an easy upload for music blogs upon the 2006 release of their snappy A Lesson in Crime EP. Back then, their chances of living beyond the next Hype Machine cycle was anyone’s guess, and any notions of longevity seemed moot for a band that preferred to wrap things up around the two-minute mark. But as other 2006 indie upstarts like Annuals, Be Your Own Pet, and Voxtrot have blown up or faded away, Tokyo Police Club endure.
And this is not a coincidence.
Champ is their brand new album.

DEVOSomething for Everybody
![]()

More than three decades after the release of its visionary debut, Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo, and a full 20 years since its last studio album, Devo is back with the aptly titled Something for Everybody. The long rumored, wildly anticipated album (which was launched with a memorable performance in Vancouver at the Winter Olympics) features the band’s classic line-up (Mark and Bob Mothersbaugh, Gerald and Bob Casale) joined by drummer Josh Freese (Nine Inch Nails, Guns n’ Roses). Though the songs recorded for Something for Everybody are built on Devo‘s signature mechanized swing, the recording and presentation of the album saw the band experimenting with an entirely new approach. A series of studies were conducted through the clubdevo.com site to help the band with its creative decisions, from color selection to song mixes.

LOST PROPHETSThe Betrayed

Darker in tone than previous efforts, Lostprophets‘ fourth album is possibly their least pop-focused release to date. Taking inspiration from band’s such as Faith No More, although The Betrayed may not be as immediately accessible as more recent efforts, it has much more depth. Some of the material here recalls the band’s earliest days as a hardcore punk act, shedding the emo/pop-punk style for which they are widely known.

Unexpected Recoil‘s release entitled Selected. This release features a selection of classic Recoil tracks chosen by Alan Wilder who says: “the collection is made up of my personal favourites, remastered and edited together into what I consider a cohesive and total listening experience”. The Recoil project was born in 1986 as a two-track experimental EP. The most significant work has evolved since 1996 with the releases of the Unsound Methods, Liquid and subHuman albums. Over the course of the last 10 years Alan has been ably accompanied by Paul Kendall who brings his idiosyncratic view to the whole procedure. He has also been fortunate enough to cement working relationships with many writers, vocalists and musicians, most of whom appear on this new release.

Anders Trentemøller‘s first album, The Last Resort, emerging back in 2006, was a wonderful introduction to his dark, electronics-driven world. Since then, a lot has happened at the musical front that he has so steadfastly adhered to and helped to prosper. It was a glowing reference point in ambient yet dramatic music. But Into The Great Wide Yonder seems to beckon a new tack, an embrace of the estranged analogue tangents that were so deliberately ignored on his previous outings.

FOALSTotal Life Forever
![]()

The second album of Oxford five-piece Foals plays like a Best Of sampler of the past twenty years of British alt-rock, one of those candy boxes with only the good flavors, none of that weird pistachio-black licorice shit. It’s got the silvery guitar shimmer of early U2, the airy and charmingly slurred vocals of The Cure, the electric dub and drive of Massive Attack (in short, it’s a fitting dedication to Foals’s musical heritage, and a bold statement by a band poised to join the very canon they channel with Total Life Forever). Wrapped in a pineapple glaze of tropical production, courtesy of ex-Clor guitarist and vocalist Luke Smith, the album drips with atmosphere. Down-tempo tracks grow and curl with layering synthesizers and icy drums that conjure images of the arctic ocean warmed by the setting sun before they explode into fireballs of funk; other times the rays of light are more immediate, as in the flowing.
Either way, Foals know how to hit their harmonies, not one forced, each adding to the sway and beauty found within this oceanic collection of songs.
